Front Yard Transformed with Drought Tolerant Landscaping
by Jared Knickmeyer on May 11, 2010
Drive through the quaint neighborhood of the Alphabet Streets in Pacific Palisades and without a doubt your eye will be drawn to one corner residence in particular. Bruce Izmirian, president of Sacred Grounds Landscape Design, used his expertise to enhanced not only his client’s home but their outdoor lifestyle too.
He transformed a typical water thirsty lawn into an environment of special seating areas and peaceful water features that are embraced by plants native to California and the Mediterranean. Stay a while and little treasures like colored glass lanterns, authentic Mexican tiles and an organic garden reveal themselves to you.
Sacred Grounds is a full service landscape design and build company specializing in unique water-wise, California-friendly gardens. They extend their creativity to both residential and commercial uses alike. From customized water features that embody zen-like tranquility, to planning driveway makeovers, family central pools, outdoor fireplaces, party patios, efficient irrigation, stone artistry, and mood lighting, Sacred Grounds can make your yard a personal paradise.
By treating every project as an opportunity for restoration, the team at Sacred Grounds creates for their cherished clients a stable, ornamental and low-input garden with substantial habitat.
As a landscape designer and well traveled photographer, Bruce approaches the field of landscape design with an artists sensibility and as an environmental advocate. He embraces the landscape with his love of color and form, uniting beauty and function. Bruce works closely with his clients to actualize their vision in order to create an aesthetic architectural and natural setting.

Love this post. This is the way most of us will be going in the future, and it is such a win win, we get terrific gardens, close to nature and we use less water. Fabulous!
We have a home in Tucson on an acre which has several palm trees, lots of oleanders and many other plants that require water. I’ve often thought how great it would be to re-landscape the property with drought tolerant plants and even a gray-water collection system. I wonder if Bruce might be open to assisting with the project. I love his work! Thanks, Jared.
Bruce’s use of low water plant material really opened my eyes to how beautiful this type of landscaping can be. I’m sure he would be able to help or at least point you in the right direction with your home in AZ. I am curious to find out the possibilities and color he could bring to a native desert landscape. Keep me posted!
Landscaping truly can be an art — all of the colors and textures that can be mixed with different foliage… pretty amazing.
Ryan, exactly what I was thinking!
fantastic! I love indigenous planting in LA. The native grasses are excellent to look at, especially around homes. They “frame” a house effectively. And they save water!
